Fourth son of Fëanor, called the Dark (alias Morifinwë, mother’s name Carnastir), “most harsh of the brothers”, ruled in Thargelion, fled south after the Dagor Bragollach, fought bravely against Morgoth’s armies, but unknowingly brought in the treacherous Easterlings in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, at last attacked Doriath together with Celegorm and Curufin, where they succeeded in killing Dior, Thingol’s heir, as well as his still young sons, but were also slain themselves.

Caranthir in Quenya is Morifinwe  "Dark": a reference to his black hair but also slightly prophetic. Mother name Carnistir meaning "red face"
